Maijooks to celebrate thirtieth anniversary!

The first Maijooks (May Race) took place in 1988, orchestrated by Maiklubi (May Club).

May Race was set up for the very purpose, and attracting a couple of hundred female joggers. By the beginning of the new millennium, the event drew a participation of seven thousand runners. Organizational inspiration and example was taken from the Finnish running event Naisten Kymppi, held in support of mobility impaired children.

In 2009 Spordiürituste Korraldamise Klubi (Sport Event Team) took over the organization of Maijooks, raising the organizational bar of the annual springtime race to a whole new level, also reflected by the ever increasing participant numbers. In 2011 the event for the first time registered ten thousand participants; 15 000 recreational athletes happily join the race today. This is a phenomenal number for a small country such as Estonia. At times, women indeed show men how it’s done.
