Estonian Running Support Foundation established in honour of the 100th anniversary of Jüri Lossmann’s Olympic medal victory.

22.08.2020

One hundred years ago, on 22 August 1920, Estonian Jüri Lossmann won silver medal in marathon at the Antwerp Olympic Games with time 2:32.48,6. This was the first Olympic medal for the Republic of Estonia. Gold medal and the world top result were only 12.8 seconds away. The result achieved by Lossmann in Antwerp remained the Estonian record for 38 years and it would grant a high place at Estonian marathons even today.

Jüri Lossmann’s silver remains to be the only running event medal for Estonia.

Organisers of Estonia’s largest race Tallinna Maraton established the Estonian Running Support Foundation on the one hundredth anniversary of the first Olympic medal victory of the Republic of Estonia. The aim of the charity foundation is to ensure the sustainability of running in Estonia by supporting young talents and aspiring athletes, motivating the coaches and preserving traditional races. With this new initiation, the founders want running to bring glory to tiny Estonia also in the next one hundred years.

Private persons and companies can donate to the Estonian Running Support Foundation. The donations can be made to the NPO Spordiürituste Korraldamise Klubi accounts:

The first considerable contribution into the Estonian Running Support Foundation will be made by the participants of the Tallinn Maraton virtual race held between 1 and 30 September. At least ten thousand runners are expected at the Estonia’s largest virtual race. 1 euro will be donated for each participant to the support foundation to ensure that running in Estonia will preserve its significance also in the future.

You can participate in the first Tallinna Maraton virtual race by running a track and distance of your own preference. The programme includes kids’ races, five- and ten-kilometre tracks, half-marathon (21.1 km) and a classic marathon (42.2 km).

For the first time, the programme also includes a marathon combination that is suitable for everyone who loves running or moving. This means covering the full-length marathon distance during September either by running or walking in segments until the full distance is covered. One segment must be at least a tenth of marathon i.e. 4.2 kilometres. Marathon combination finishers will receive the same medal and shirt in mail as those who run the classic marathon.

We invite everyone to participate – those who have participated before and those who are just planning to take part. Everyone will find a fitting running or walking distance. Everyone one can pass the selected and registered distance at a suitable time and place in September following the enforced rules. After passing the distance, the participant must confirm this by uploading a proof of their race in the organisers’ virtual environment. All virtual race participants will receive an e-diploma via an electronic channel and a unique medal according to the distance by regular mail.
