Estonia’s largest recreational sports event kicked off this morning at 9 a.m. on Tallinn Song Festival Grounds from where more than a thousand half marathon participants went on the 21.1 km track.

Three men - Leonid Latsepov, Janis Viskers, and Tiidrek Nurme - ran the entire distance at a level fast pace. The decisive sprint during the last kilometer landed in the half marathon’s first place Tiidrek Nurme from Tartu Ülikooli Akadeemiline Spordiklubi (The University of Tartu’s Academic Sports Club) who benefits from experience from three Olympic Games and achieved the time of 1 hour, 5 minutes, and 39 seconds. Nurme’s time was merely three second faster than that of Latvia’s fastest long-distance runner Janis Viskers who won second place. Third place went to Leonid Latsepov from Sparta Spordiselts (Sparta Sports Association) with his personal record of 1:05:49. The next three male finishers were Karel Hussar from Spordiklubi Jooksupartner (Sports Club Running Partner), Juri Kovaljov from Audentese Spordiklubi (Audentes’ Sports Club), and German runner John Volkenandt.

In women’s competition, Helena Peik, a successful recreational triathlete, from Swedbanki Spordiklubi (Swedbank’s Sports Club) surprisingly emerged as the fastest with 1 hour 24 minutes, and 11 seconds. Second place went to Kergejõustikuklubi Vike’s (Track and Field Club Vike) Kelly Nevolihhin, one of the best in Estonian track and field races, with 1:25:09, while third place went to Helen Bell with 1:26:20. The next three female finishers were Kertu Kula from Sparta Spordiselts (Sparta Sports Association), Helin Meier from Nõmme Kergejõustikuklubi (Nõmme Track and Field Club), and Sparta’s runner Maie Kuusik.

The program for Estonia’s largest recreational sports event continues at 5 p.m. this evening with the ten kilometer RIMI Autumn Run and culminates with a full marathon that starts at 9 a.m. on Sunday morning.
