Energetic television host Reet Linna will be starting this year's LHV Women's Run. "Movement is necessary for everyone, regardless of age," Linna encourages others to participate. The television personality will celebrate her 80th birthday on June 1!

This is the 37th year of the May Run. Surely, you have participated before?

Oh, that must have been a long time ago! I can't even remember when, but I have a visual memory of starting from the Song Festival Grounds.

What is your relationship with running/walking?

I have never loved running. My daughter and I tried to run together in Merivälja once, but it didn’t suit either of us. However, when I discovered Nordic walking—about twenty years ago—I realized that it suited me well. Walking with poles feels safer, and my upper body is engaged all the time.

Is 7 kilometers a suitable distance?

I walk a similar distance every morning near my home. I started thinking that it doesn’t matter whether I walk in Merivälja or with others around the Song Festival Grounds for a change. It’s all just walking. Of course, I’m not in a rush—my age is also a factor. I choose my pace according to how I feel—sometimes I walk faster, sometimes slower. But I don’t stroll!

You are undoubtedly in good shape!

Regarding my shape, a few weeks ago my back gave out—that happens from time to time. This means I haven’t been exercising or training my abdominal muscles. It's well known that if you don't have strong abs, your back will suffer. Everything that moves wears out. But I’ve managed to recover, and I need to keep checking and maintaining myself from time to time.

So, strength training in addition to Nordic walking?

I don’t really do strength training. I would gladly do it, but I haven’t found a circuit training class I like here in Merivälja. I did one or two rounds and then did some exercises afterward.

Every step counts!

You have to motivate yourself and desire to move. The heart, in fact, the whole body wants movement. Of course, there are those for whom movement is difficult, and when body weight is high and joints are painful, it’s harder to start. But even those who have had hip or knee surgeries can gather themselves and gradually start, and soon they will feel that their body needs it. You can even move with a walker. The first time maybe just ten steps, the next time already twenty. The main thing is to have motivation. It’s also important to have someone by your side to help.

I might be told that it’s easy to say—I don’t have anything wrong with me! But movement is essential for everyone—at least half an hour every day, preferably outdoors. Start gradually. Those who can’t walk far can also dance! At an older age, that’s a great alternative!

Is it easier to move together?

Absolutely, it’s easier to move together. I walk alone to think my thoughts. But being with someone makes the time pass more quickly; it’s easier and more enjoyable. Especially if you haven’t been active for a while and need to get back into it. Of course, it’s also safer together!
