Tallinna Maraton will increase the number of foreign visitors

 

During the period from 2016 to 2018, Enterprise Estonia (EAS) will be supporting the organisation of Tallinna Maratoon, Estonia’s biggest community sports event, with two hundred thousand euros from the European Regional Development Fund’s resources under the international major events measure.

 

This support is aimed to raise awareness of Estonia as a scene for major events, boosting the sustainability of major events, and to increase the number of nights spent by foreign visitors in Estonian accommodation establishments. With the help of the funds from EAS, the organisers are pursuing the goal of increasing the total number of nights spent in Estonians accommodation establishments by foreign visitors in connection with Tallinna Maraton in the years 2016-2018 to at least 25,500 single nights. A total of 18,781 amateur exercisers participated in this 2016 largest international marathon run in the Baltic states and Estonia’s biggest community sports event. Tallinna Maraton, which for the first time involved a three-day programme and took place on renewed courses, brought to Estonia a record-breaking number of foreigners. In 2016, 2168 running tourists from as much as 54 European countries took part in various distances in Tallinn. Most participants were from Finland, Russia, Latvia, Great Britain and Germany. All the continents except for the Antarctic were represented.
The Tallinna Maraton to take place in 2018 that marks the one hundredth anniversary of the Republic of Estonia anticipates the participation of already five thousand foreigners, and to involve them, active cooperation is done with the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS) as well as with several organisers of international marathon runs and tourism enterprises.
 

In 2018, Tallinna Maraton will take place on 7.-9. September.

 

Tallinna Maraton’s races held over the weekend gathered a record number of 23,940 sports enthusiasts, which makes it the sports event with the largest number of participants ever held in Estonia.

Tallinna Maraton races held over the weekend, 7-9 September, made up the sports event with the largest participant number that the one-hundred-year-old Estonia has ever witnessed. 3,914 runners partook in the 5 km Nike We Run Tallinn youth race held in Old Town and its vicinity on Friday. 3,637 kids in different age groups raced in the Mesikäpp kids’ races on Saturday. 10,201 active people reached the finish line of the 10 km held on the same evening. 3,697 runners finished the 21.1 km half-marathon raced today. 2,491 brave runners finished the classic 42.2 km marathon distance, which makes this event the international marathon with the largest number of participants ever held in the Baltic states.

Five thousand foreign guests from sixty countries celebrated Estonia’s 100thbirthday by running the different tracks of Tallinna Maraton. These numbers are also new records and make the sports event with the largest participant number of Estonia also the sports event with the largest number of foreign participants.

 

Runners came from all the Estonian counties and cities, more than one thousand work teams and companies participated. All the participants ran in total 300,000 km and drank more than 50,000 litres of water and sports drinks.

 

For the first time ever, more than thirteen hundred people were involved in preparing and hosting the Tallinna Maraton.
