The First Women’s Half Marathon in Estonia – A New Chapter Begins at LHV Maijooks 2026
In 2026, something truly unique is happening in Estonia – as part of LHV Maijooks, the country will host its first-ever half marathon dedicated exclusively to women.
This is not only an exciting new distance in the springtime event program but also a significant milestone in the sports history of the entire region.
International Recognition: Maijooks joins AIMS
Starting in 2026, LHV Maijooks is officially a member of AIMS – the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races. This means that Maijooks is now listed in the official global running calendar, meeting international standards for well-organized, high-quality races.
Even more – Maijooks is the first women’s running event in the Baltic and Eastern European region to be included in AIMS’ global women’s program. This is a great recognition for Estonian sports and for the strong running culture among women here.
A First in the Entire Region
The Maijooks Women’s Half Marathon is the first event of its kind in the Baltics and Eastern Europe. The 21 km course is open to women only – from elite runners to everyday athletes – anyone ready to take on a bigger challenge and be part of something meaningful.
It’s a chance to make history, highlight women’s presence in sport, and celebrate the joy of movement together.
A Growing Global Trend
Running is one of the most popular sports in the world, yet less than 10% of races are held for women only. This is starting to change – international organizations like AIMS and World Athletics are paying more attention to women in sport and actively encouraging events created for women. Today, there are even separate world records and rankings for women-only races, compared to mixed-gender events. It shows just how important and fast-growing the space for women’s running has become.
Women’s Running Tourism – A Movement on the Rise
Running events designed for women are becoming powerful reasons to travel, connect, and celebrate movement. Around the world, more and more women are combining fitness and friendship with travel experiences. Tallinn’s charm, the spring energy of Maijooks, and the symbolic location of the Song Festival Grounds make it a perfect destination for this growing movement.
