Thinking about running your first international marathon? Here's why Tallinn might be the perfect place
So, you’re dreaming of running a marathon abroad — something new, exciting, a little outside your comfort zone? We know that feeling. And we think Tallinn, Estonia might just be the perfect start line.
Whether you’re a seasoned runner looking for a scenic new course or a first-timer thinking “Could I really do this?” — here’s everything you need to know before taking that leap (and booking that flight).
Getting here is easy
Tallinn is well connected to major European cities, and Tallinn Airport was recently voted Europe’s Most Enjoyable Airport. Even better — it’s just 10 minutes from the city center. No stress, no long transfers, no confusion.
Prefer public transport? Bus lines 2 and 15 take you straight from the airport to the city centre.
Want a taxi instead? Licensed taxis are always waiting just outside the arrivals hall — no pre-booking needed. Quick, easy, and affordable.
Where you’ll run (and stay)
The Swedbank Tallinn Marathon courses are flat, fast, and set on one scenic loop, taking you through the city’s stunning districts — from the UNESCO-listed Old Town to seaside promenades, leafy parks, and modern business areas. No cobblestones, no hills. Just smooth, enjoyable running.
There are plenty of hotels, Airbnbs, and hostels near the start and finish area. Many runners stay right in the heart of the city — so you can walk to the race, grab dinner nearby, and explore on foot.
Will I feel welcome? Absolutely.
English is widely spoken, and the event team is used to hosting runners from over 90 countries. Whether you’re solo or coming with a crew, you’ll be part of a supportive, high-energy community the moment you arrive.
What else can I do in Tallinn?
So much! Think medieval streets, cozy cafés, sea views, Nordic spas, and even day trips to the bogs or a ferry ride to Finland. It’s the kind of place you’ll want to stay a few days after your race — and treat yourself.
