Running from the Other Side of the World: The Bowler Family's Virtual Journey from Australia to Tallinn

26.06.2025

For the Bowler family from Australia, the Swedbank Tallinn Marathon has become more than a virtual run—it’s a yearly tradition that connects them with their Estonian heritage, keeps them active, and offers a good dose of humour along the way.

We first heard about the Tallinn Marathon in July 2020,” says Denis Bowler. “But honestly, none of us can quite remember where! Most likely online, maybe in an Estonian Facebook group.” Since then, Denis, his son Lawrence, and younger brother Ross have taken part in the virtual event every year.

All three have Estonian citizenship by descent, through their mother Astrid, and though they’ve each visited Tallinn twice in the past decade, they haven’t yet run the race in person—something they still hope to do. “Maybe one year we’ll make it to the real start line in Tallinn,” Denis adds.

Their motivation to join the virtual race back in 2020 came at a time of global uncertainty. “The virtual run seemed like a fun distraction during the height of COVID,” says Denis. “Plus, the idea of getting a medal and t-shirt if we finished was pretty appealing!

While they admit to a habit of registering early and training late, they’ve created a post-run tradition they look forward to every year: a fire pit gathering and a bottle of Vana Tallinn.

A Run to Remember

The family’s most memorable moment came during their first marathon attempt. “Lawrence started complaining about his right foot feeling sore,” Denis recalls. “Ross powered ahead to finish first while Lawrence and I slowed down. When we finally stopped, Lawrence checked his phone and saw a message from his girlfriend (now wife), with a photo of his insole and the message: ‘You left this behind – is it important?’”

In that very same run, Lawrence carried a small backpack with an Estonian flag poking out the back. “Quite a few people saw it and stopped us to ask what we were doing. It was a great way to connect.

Favourite Medals and Ongoing Motivation

Of all the medals they’ve earned, the 2020 one remains their favourite—with a special mention to 2022. And while the medals and shirts are nice, it’s the deeper connection that keeps them coming back.

“This run helps us stay fit and, more importantly, it’s a small way to stay connected to our Estonian roots.”

Whether you're running through the streets of Tallinn or halfway across the world like the Bowler family, the Swedbank Tallinn Marathon virtual run is a celebration of movement, connection, and shared heritage.

Registration for the 2025 virtual race is now open – and yes, your finisher’s medal will be shipped to your home, anywhere in the world.
