Roughly a thousand participants had registered for the 42.195 km marathon that kicked off this morning at 9 a.m. at Tallinn Song Festival Grounds.

Thanks to a final sprint during the last few kilometers, Kenyan runner Ibrachim Mukunga Wachira emerged as the winner of this year’s Tallinn Marathon with 2 hours, 30 minutes, and 43 seconds. Dmitri Aristov from Treeningpartner (Training Partner) sports club came in as a close second with 2:30:55 in the overall ranking, still for the first time winning the title of the Estonian Marathon Champion. Tallinn Marathon’s third place and the Silver medal in the Estonian Championships went to another Treeningpartner runner Aleksander Kulešov with 2:34:39. The fastest female runner in Tallinn Marathon and the Estonian Women’s Champion with 2 hours, 44 minutes, and 46 seconds was Kaisa Kukk from Tartu Spordiselts Kalev (Tartu Sports Association Kalev). In both the overall ranking and the Estonian Championships ranking, the second place went to Kadiliis Kuiv from Spordiklubi Prorunner (Sports Club Prorunner) with 2:48:52, leaving third place for Prorunner’s Anne-Ly Palm with 3:02:30. The first three in the women’s ranking for Tallinn Championships were Kadiliis Kuiv and Treeningpartner’s runners Maris Heinaru and Mari Boikov.

The forecast champion Jekaterina Patjuk from Tartu Ülikooli Akadeemiline Spordiklubi (The University of Tartu’s Academic Sports Club) who held the leader position for more than half of the marathon’s distance was forced to discontinue for health reasons.

Marti Medar from Treeningpartner-Sportland running team beat the Guinness world record for the fastest marathon dribbling two basketballs. Medar’s time was 3 hours, 36 minutes, and 36 seconds.

Due to restrictions and safety rules, Estonia’s largest recreational sports event this year had less participants than usual. Nevertheless, nearly five thousand running enthusiasts and exercise lovers from 36 countries registered for Tallinn Marathon and RIMI Autumn Run. Tallinn Marathon’s program lasts until the end of this month as the Virtual Run remains open for participation September 1 through September 30.
