First mixed distance run in Saudi Arabia

For the first time ever Saudi Arabia has hosted a mixed international race headedby an elite field.

The race was the Khobar International Half Marathon held on 27 November on a certified course and attended by Prince Khalid bin Talal.

There were 607 starters in the half marathon (21% women) with equal prize money to bewon in the men’s and women’s categories.

 

The 18 elite men and seven elite women came from 11 countries. The race started at 15.00 and conditions were hot and windy. Kenyans Rhonzas Kilimo and Gloria Kite had clear wins

with 1:02:05 and 1:12.42 respectively.

 

Khobar is a city on the Arabian Gulf coast of Saudi Arabia just north of Bahrain. It is home to 457,748 people and as of 2017 forms part of the ‘Triplet Cities’ or Dammam metropolitan area along with the cities of Dammam and Dhahran.

 

The course was mainly out and back along the broad corniche road with a diversion inland between 14–19km. Apart from the headline race this ground-breaking event also offered an 8km
race (472 starters of which 37% were women) and a family run of 3km. A special needs event was also conducted over 3km. The 8km and 3km courses were out-back using the same start/finish as the title event.
