The biggest public sporting event in Estonia will take place in a month’s time

10.08.2023

Tallinn Marathon, Estonia’s biggest international public sporting event, taking place in a month’s time, from 8 to 10 September, will be significant this year for exercise enthusiasts, elite runners and the spectators alike.

This year, the Tallinn Marathon and the Tallinn Fall Race are dedicated to the 105th anniversary of the Republic of Estonia, offering the joy of movement to everyone from beginners to top-level running enthusiasts of different ages. The spectacle at the starting and finish line at the foot of Tall Hermann (Pikk Hermann) in Toompea promises to be grand and full of high spirits, because participants at Estonia’s largest public sporting event are expected to arrive at the course dressed in blue-black-and-white, and everyone who finishes the main distances will receive a unique participation medal at the finish line depicting the beloved Estonian national bird, the barn swallow, spreading its wings.

The official running shirt of the Tallinn Marathon is designed in the national colours of Estonia. The custom-made shirt made from blue, black and white fabric features wavy colours of the Estonian flag running from right to left and the Tallinn Marathon logo on the chest on the right. Depending on the choice of distance, the blue-black-and-white shirt is available for registered participants either for free or for a discounted price.

The year 2023 is a year for physical activity, and those who have not participated before are also welcome to attend Estonia’s largest physical activity event. You can participate either alone or with friends, by running, walking or Nordic walking. There are suitable and doable distances for everyone.

This year, the Tallinn Marathon will be the most high-level and competitive event ever, as Estonia’s most participated international sporting event counts, for the first time, as a World Athletics Elite label running event both for marathons and half-marathons. The higher the level of organisation of a competition in global qualifiers, the more high rating points are available for both Estonian and foreign runners, which is one of the important prerequisites for making it to title races.

Like the Tallinn Marathon, several well-known events taking place in large European cities, including Paris, Prague, Rome, Lisbon, Vienna, Frankfurt and Seville marathons, as well as several other major races from other continents are included among elite-level races.

Roman Fosti, one of the top long-distance runners in Estonia, will run his last top-level marathon in Tallinn on 10 September. All running enthusiasts have a wonderful opportunity to take part in Romka’s last big run by running along or cheering him along at the course. The day before the marathon, on 9 September, Fosti is the starter for those participating in the half marathon and the 10-kilometre Rimi Autumn Run who will have a great opportunity to give their respects to our successful marathoner with a warm joint applause before the start.

The three-day programme of the Tallinn Marathon, which involves both elite runners and thousands of exercise enthusiasts, begins on Friday, 8 September, with a 5-kilometre Nike Youth Run, followed by the 21.1-kilometre half marathon and 10-kilometre Rimi Autumn Run on Saturday, 9 September, and concludes on Sunday, 10 September, with the classic marathon run (42.2 km). The programme also includes Limpa children’s runs and the virtual Marathon Combo, which has gained popularity among enthusiasts, throughout September.
