Estonia’s largest virtual sports event kicks off TODAY!

01.09.2020

Estonia’s largest virtual sports event kicks off today setting in motion thousands of athletes and sports enthusiasts throughout September. Several public figures set an example by participating.

You can participate in the first Tallinna Maraton virutal race that is sponsored by the city of Tallinn and RIMI and that takes place from 1 to 30 September by running a track and distance of your own preference. The programme includes kids’ races, five- and ten-kilometre tracks, half-marathon (21.1 km) and a classic marathon (42.2 km).

The most popular virtual race track is the marathon combination that is suitable for everyone who loves running or moving. This means covering the full-length marathon distance during September either by running or walking in segments until the full distance is covered. One segment must be at least a tenth of marathon i.e. 4.2 kilometres.

Everyone one can pass the selected and registered distance at a suitable time and place in September following the enforced rules. After passing the distance, the participant must confirm this by uploading a proof of their race in the organisers’ virtual environment. All virtual race participants will receive an e-diploma via an electronic channel and a unique medal according to the distance by regular mail.

This year’s Tallinna Maraton medal design is inspired by the symbol of hope, determination and will, the brightest star in our sky – the North Star. All marathon and combination marathon finishers will also receive an awesome T-shirt inspired by the Academy Award and Golden Globe winning movie Forrest Gump

As at today, seven thousand participants have already registered for the first ever virtual Tallinna Maraton. As guessed, the most popular distances are the combination marathon and the 10K track, both have currently nearly two thousand runners. 976 participants have registered for the half-marathon, 855 for the marathon and 724 for the five-kilometre race. More than 600 people are registered for the kids’ races.

All counties of Estonia are represented. More than 1200 foreign visitors from 49 countries are also participating. It is also worth mentioning that 55% of the participants are female.

Nearly half of the participants are from the capital of Estonia, Tallinn. Mayor of Tallinn Mihhail Kõlvart and deputy mayor Vadim Belobrovtsev have decided to set an example for everyone by participating in the marathon combination event. Olympic winner Gerd Kanter, personal trainer Polina Mattisen with her husband, musician Mihkel Mattisen, Sky Plus radio hosts Kristjan Hirmo, Andi Raig and Brigitte Susanne Hunt, active lifestyle promoter Sandra Raju and several others have set the same goal. Vaido Padumäe, the CEO of RIMI, the main sponsor of Tallinna Maraton virtual race, has also set a challenging goal for himself – he will run the virtual marathon.

We are also happy to see the best Estonian marathon runners Tiidrek Nurme and Roman Fosti participating, as well as the triplets Liina, Leila and Lily Luik who consider the marathon combination an excellent change for the sometimes tedious trainings.

At least ten thousand runners are expected at Estonia’s largest virtual race. Participation supports the Estonian Running Support Foundation to ensure that running in Estonia will preserve its significance also in the future.
